John Mulkearns RIP
It is with great sadness that we report the passing of the nicest and most popular tournament director ever – John Mulkearns from Crossmolina. John was the King of Open Pairs Directors. Bridge players from all over Ireland join Crossmolina in their mourning. For as long as any of us can remember John has been involved in Bridge at all levels, as a player, teacher, administrator, president but most of us will know him for his tournament directing skills. Mayo and the North-West region owe John an immense debt of gratitude for his unselfish commitment to organising games for us all, night after night, week after week, year after year. John was there long before any of the rest of us ever heard anything about directing and even took the time to introduce us all to the modern technological advances of the game. John was scoring by computer long before most us knew how to score by hand.
We extend our deepest sympathies to his wife and best friend Breeda and all his family. We remember John as being the best dressed (thanks to Breeda), best organised, most laid back bridge director. His jovial, charming, tongue-in-cheek, polite professional manner will live on in our memories. John always offered support and encouragement to new tournament directors and I for one am most grateful to John for his warm words of advice and encouragement to me in my early days. May he rest in peace.
